Thomas Edison’s Winter Estate

On December 31, 1879, Thomas Edison gave the first demonstration of his incandescent light bulb in Menlo Park, New Jersey. Edison was a very smart man. He didn’t want to spend his winters freezing. In 1885, he brought property along the Caloosahatchee River in Fort Myers, Florida. He built a beautiful home and lab there. Today, you can visit this National Historic Landmark.

A visit to the Edison & Ford Winter Estates is like a trip back in time. Edison’s home is perfectly maintained. As you step onto the verandah, feeling those warm tropical breezes, you can picture yourself here at the turn of the century. You can peer into his living room, and imagine him listening to phonograph records. Of course, the house is lighted by his famous incandescent bulbs. You will also get to see one of the first swimming pools in this part of Florida. My, have times changed!!

Fort Myers, Florida became a popular place for prominent Americans to vacation at. The warm, balmy winter days made it a terrific destination for snow-bound Northerners. Henry Ford liked the area so much that he built a house right next to Edison’s. Your tour will take you past his house and into his garage. Yes, there are a few vintage Ford’s to see!!

Edison also built a laboratory here. His lab is literally frozen in time. There are vials and bottles filled with things he was actually working on! Your guide will tell you about some of the famous experiments conducted here. There is also a terrific museum showcasing some of Edison’s greatest inventions. Did you know that he helped invent the x-ray machine, the stock ticker, the toaster, and the telegraph? Plus, there is a beautiful garden on the property. The garden has over 1,000 different plants, including a banyan tree that has weathered a few major hurricanes.

All tours of the estate are guided. Your tour guides will regale you with stories about Edison’s inventions and life in Southwest Florida. There are plenty of spots to take some terrific pictures by the river. Tour his estate in the morning and spend your afternoon on the beautiful, white sandy beaches of Sanibel.

The U.S.S. Arizona Memorial, Hawaii

This week marks 69 years since the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. December 7, 1941 – A day that will live in infamy. It was a beautiful sunny Sunday morning and sailors were beginning to prepare for the day ahead. This is Hawaii after all. What better place to be stationed? All that suddenly changed when the Japanese began bombing the harbor just before 0755 hour. In just 2 hours, the Japanese sunk or severely damaged 8 battleships, 3 destroyers, and 3 light cruisers. The Navy and Marines lost over 2,000 men.

Hawaiian vacations are filled with fun, sun, swaying palm trees, and days spent lounging on beautiful beaches. But, visitors who come to Oahu should take time to include a trip to the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. Because of the attack, American officially entered World War II. As a nation, we are forever grateful for the sacrifices and bravery that occurred here 69 years ago.

The National Park Service operates the memorial. This year, the Park Service opened up a re-vamped museum which includes mementos from that fateful day along with interviews of Pearl Harbor survivors. Some of the men and women working at the museum are Pearl Harbor survivors. They are willing to share with you stories of that day and their experiences in the War.

After a short film, you will board a boat that will take you to the U.S.S. Arizona. A visit to the U.S.S. Arizona is a moving experience. When you arrive at the memorial, you are standing on hallowed ground. The memorial is built right above the actual ship. When the Arizona sunk, she took 1,177 members of her crew with her. This is a solemn and reflective place. There are plaques listing the names of the men who were lost. You may see oil seeping from the ship or see World War II veterans throw leis into the harbor to remember their lost friends.

The USS Missouri, USS Bowfin, and Pacific Aviation Museum are also located at Pearl Harbor. All are worth your time. It is only fitting that the USS Missouri is permanently docked at Pearl Harbor. We entered the war when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. The Japanese officially surrendered on the deck of the USS Missouri.

Holiday Gift Ideas for the National Park Lover

The Holidays are here once again. It is time to decide what to get your friends and family members. Do you want to give the standard gifts – ties, clothes, perfumes, DVD’s, and CD’s? Or do you want to get them something they would really like and never expect? If your family and friends enjoy visiting National Parks, we have some gift ideas for you.

The Internet is great for Christmas shopping. You have so many more choices than you do just going to the mall. National parks have their own websites, and many have links to the park’s gift shops. Here are a few of our favorites.

Grand Canyon National Park Gifts (www.grandcanyonlodges.com/shop) – You can purchase Grand Canyon T-shirts, books, videos, Native American jewelry, knick knacks, and even food items. Our favorite – National Park Monopoly. The game is the same as traditional Monopoly, but the properties are different. You can buy up National Parks like Yellowstone, Hawaii Volcanoes, and Glacier.

Great Smoky Mountain Association
(www.smokiesstore.org) - If you have ever visited the Smokies, you probably tasted some of that good country cooking. Well, you can purchase some of those foods here. Yummy blackberry preserves, apple butter, and honey. You can even buy cornmeal produced at one of the area's famous gristmills. There are also t-shirts, calendars, posters, and DVD’s available for purchase. All purchases made on this site benefit Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

Yellowstone National Park Store (www.yellowstonenationalparklodges.com) – For many years, the Fred Harvey Company operated gift stores and restaurants in Western National Parks. This site follows in the Fred Harvey tradition. You can buy a variety of souvenirs here including shirts, planners, toys, mugs, shot glasses, books, and even lotions. We love the huckleberry products offered here. If you ever visited this area, you probably ate something huckleberry flavored and loved it!! Well, you can buy huckleberry syrup, huckleberry toppings, and even huckleberry flavored candy on this site!!

National Park Passes – If you have someone on your Christmas list who visits America’s National Parks each year, consider giving them a National Park Pass. Celebrate the Holidays – Disney Style

With Thanksgiving less than a week away, it’s time to start making your holiday travel plans. You might decide to go skiing or visit the relatives. But, you should consider heading down to Florida to take in one of the most spectacular Christmas celebrations in the country. Nobody does the holidays quite like Disney World. Each park celebrates the season in its own special way. Downtown Disney and the Disney Village are decorated in style complete with Santa’s village. Plus, the weather is perfect. Comfortable during the day and cool at night.

EPCOT:
EPCOT’s signature holiday event is the nightly Candlelight Processional. Each night the Christmas story is retold by a celebrity narrator as a 50 piece orchestra plays and a choir sings traditional Christmas carols. Located at the America Gardens Theater, this event is sure to remind you about the true meaning of Christmas and get you into the holiday spirit.
Holidays around the World is celebrated at the different countries throughout the park. This is your chance to see Santa Claus (aka St. Nick) in Japan, France, Britain, and Germany. You can learn about each country’s Christmas traditions and sample holiday fare. Stop by the American pavilion to see one of the world’s largest gingerbread houses.
Of course, Christmas decorations are scattered throughout the park. The nightly lighting of the Christmas tree is a popular event. Make sure to stay for Illuminations – a nightly fireworks and laser light show spectacular.

Magic Kingdom:
On select nights, the Magic Kingdom hosts Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. The party is filled with parades, a snow fall on Main Street (yes, snow in Florida!!), character greetings, complimentary cookies and cocoa, a fireworks show, and character greetings with your favorite Disney characters. Select rides are open, including a special Christmas themed Country Bear Jamboree. This event requires a separate ticket and lasts 5 hours. Tickets range from $43 - $60.

Here is an insider tip for you. The park is decorated throughout the holiday season. You will see the same decorations regardless of when you choose to visit the park. . Instead of 5 hours of fun, go on a day when the park is open for at least 8 -12 hours. You will see a similar fireworks show, snow falls on Main Street, all the rides are open, and you still get to meet and greet with Christmas clad Disney characters throughout the day. You will pay more for your ticket, but you will get more value for your money!! The cookies and cocoa won’t be free, but if you want them bad enough, go ahead and buy them.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

You probably have someone in your neighborhood who just loves to string hundreds of Christmas lights on their house. But you have never seen a Christmas light display like the one Hollywood Studios puts on each year. The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights transforms Hollywood Studios back lot into a brilliantly lit Christmas wonderland. Millions of twinkling lights are choreographed to dance to your favorite Christmas carols. Look for over 30 “Hidden Mickeys” in the display. Make sure to catch the toy soldier march in time under the Christmas tree.

Disney resorts also get into the holiday spirit. The Grand Floridian is our pick year after year for best decorated Disney resort. The elegant Victorian lobby is transformed into a classic Christmas setting, complete with Christmas garland decking the balconies.

Visit with the Pilgrims in Plymouth, Massachusetts

Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away. So what better way to pay tribute to the day, then take a trip to Plymouth, Massachusetts and visit some of the famous sites and landmarks in the area.

The Pilgrims were escaping religious prosecution when they boarded the Mayflower and set sail to the New World. Their voyage across the Atlantic lasted 65 very long days. On December 21, 1620, the Pilgrims discovered Plymouth Harbor and the rest is history. One year later, the First Thanksgiving was celebrated.

Plymouth Rock:

Plymouth Rock is perhaps the most famous rock in America. Did the Pilgrims actually set foot on this exact rock when they landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts? Historians have never been able to find any reference to it in the Pilgrims’ writings. But, over time it has become known as the rock Pilgrims first stepped foot on. The rock you will see is only a fraction of its original size. Tourists once chipped off pieces of this patriotic rock for souvenirs!! Today, you can see the rock in all its glory at the Plymouth Rock State Park. The rock is enclosed in a monument, located at the wharf.

Mayflower II:
No trip to Plymouth would be complete without stepping aboard the Mayflower II. This is an excellent replica of the original 17th century ship, complete with oak timbers, horn lanterns, and hand colored 17th century maps. There were 102 pilgrims who sailed on a ship like this to America. While aboard, imagine being one of those Pilgrims, living in these cramped conditions for 65 days while battling ocean swells and stormy weather!! Strike up a conversation with one of the period sailors or pilgrims strolling along the ship’s deck. It is still 1620 to them. They will tell stories of crossing the Atlantic and making a life in this strange, new world.

Plimoth Plantation:

Would you like to go back in time and step into the world of the Pilgrims? Well, you can at this 1627 English Village. The village, filled with gardens, livestock, and timber houses, gives you a glimpse of what life was like in the 1600’s. You will encounter village residents, dressed just as if it was 1627. In fact, the village residents live as if it was 1627. As you look around, villagers may begin a conversation with you. Remember, they have no idea America won the Revolutionary War. To them, there are no cars or modern conveniences. These players do a fantastic job interacting with children and adults. Don’t be surprised if that ask you about those sneakers you are wearing. To them, something is wrong if you don’t wear black horn buckled shoes!!

Visit this website for more details on the attractions around the Plymouth area: www.plimoth.org

Viewing Sites for Space Shuttle Discovery’s Final Flight

Space Shuttle Discovery is poised to take her final flight later this week. If you are going to be in Florida on launch day, you might want to consider heading over to witness the launch in person. If you aren’t a VIP or purchased (way in advance) a special viewing ticket, you will not be allowed onto the Kennedy Space Center Complex. No worries, there are plenty of viewing areas for the rest of us.

There is nothing quite like a space shuttle launch. People from all walks of life line the banks of the Indian River waiting in anticipation for liftoff. The countdown is at T minus one and then you see the first puffs of white. The engines glow bright orange as the shuttle lifts off from her seaside launch pad. As the shuttle climbs higher and higher you hear the roar of the engines as she thunders off to space. You strain your eyes to see the booster rockets separate and fall back to Earth. All that remains is the trail of smoke in the sky.

Living in Florida most of my life, I have seen my share of launches. Titusville, Florida is my pick for the best viewing. This small city sits on the banks of the Indian River directly across from the space center. You will be able to stand here and see the entire launch. Cocoa Beach is another popular spot, but I feel you just see more when you view a launch in Titusville.

There are plenty of free viewing areas in Titusville. You can stake out a spot anywhere along the Indian River on US 1 and are sure to see quite a show. One area is not necessarily better than the other. The city has created the following parks along US 1 that offer great views.

• Space View Park
• Rotary Riverview Park
• Kennedy Point Park
• William J Manzo Park

Bring your patience for two reasons. One – the launch may be scrubbed due to technical reasons or weather. Two - traffic will be a mess. Hundreds of thousands of people will descend on a relatively small town and everyone will be leaving at the same time!!

If you can’t make this launch in person, you will have one more chance. The last scheduled shuttle mission is set to take flight in February 2011.

Halloween Haunts – Salem, Massachusetts

With Halloween right around the corner, let’s visit a few attractions in America’s most bewitching town – Salem, Massachusetts.

The Salem Witch Museum:

In 1692, witchcraft hysteria swept through this part of the country. Over 400 people were accused of witchcraft, 19 people were hung, and one person was pressed to death. In the end, none of the accused was involved in witchcraft. Hysteria and fear led people to accuse friends, neighbors, enemies, and even a dog of unspeakable acts.
This museum takes you back in time and gives you a front row seat at the witch trials. A combination of special effects, life size figures, and narration gives you a chilling view of the events that unfolded here. You will witness Tituba, a West Indian housekeeper tell Salem Village children stories of the Devil. This was the main cause for all the hysteria. You will see the hanging of George Burroughs. And you will be extremely happy you did not live during that time period!!

See their website for more details and hours of operation: www.salemwitchmuseum.com

The House of the Seven Gables:

Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote “The House of the Seven Gables” back in 1851. This fictional story begins with a distinguished colonel accusing a local man of witchcraft just to get his land.

Well, the real House of the Seven Gables may not have quite that rich a history, but you can visit it today. The real Seven Gables was built in 1668 and the Turner Family called it home for over a century. You can tour six rooms and see the secret staircase. You will have to visit to see where the stairway is located!!

You can also visit Nathaniel Hawthorne’s home which was moved onto the property back in 1958. You can see where this famous American author was born and where he penned some of his most famous works. Three other 17th century homes are located on the property along with the beautiful Seaside Gardens. Guided tours are available. www.7gables.org

Tail of the Dragon

Germany may have the Autobahn, but America has the Tail of the Dragon. North Carolina’s US 129 has been billed as “America’s number one motorcycle and sports car road.” It’s easy to see why. The road is only 11 miles long, but has 318 curves. Sports car enthusiasts love to bring their rides up here to test their driving prowess. You may not actually be a professional race car driver, but you sure can feel like one!! But, keep in mind the speed limit is only 30 miles per hour.

Now, this road is not for everyone. If you are a person who constantly rides his (or her) brakes driving down a mountain, perhaps you should skip The Dragon. If you decide to conquer the drive, make sure to keep your eyes on the road, and not the scenery. With all those curves, you would hate to miss one and end up on the side of the mountain. For those who love to drive and want to test their skills, the Tail of the Dragon is a must. And, you don’t have to have a Ferrari or Porsche to enjoy it. (But those would be nice!!)

The Cherohala Skyway is another popular drive in the area. It only cost $100,000,000 to build, so you might consider giving it a try!! This road isn’t quite as treacherous as Tail of the Dragon. You will climb 5,400 feet in about 15 miles and are rewarded with spectacular views. Views of the Great Smoky Mountains and the Tellico River are worth the drive. If you are looking for a beautiful waterfall that requires no hiking, take the small detour to Bald River Falls.

Both of these drives hug the Tennessee and North Carolina state lines. Fall is a perfect time to visit. The air is crisp and the leaves are beginning to change. If you are visiting Great Smoky Mountain National Park, consider taking these two drives.

For more information and detailed directions, check out this website: www.tailofthedragon.com

The Blue Ridge Parkway

Fall has finally arrived. Temperatures are turning cooler and Mother Nature has begun putting on one of her most spectacular shows. Forests across the nation are being transformed. Trees are now filled with gorgeous red, orange, yellow, and golden leaves. People are gearing up to take driving tours to look at beautiful fall foliage. And, one of the nation’s best drives offers some spectacular views.

The Blue Ridge Parkway runs from Shenandoah National Park to Great Smoky Mountain National Park. For 489 miles, drivers will travel through some of the most spectacular mountain scenery east of the Mississippi River. Fall provides an extra incentive to visit. Fall foliage is spectacular here. Forests line the parkway which means ample leaf peeping opportunities. Overlooks provide picture perfect views and great picnic areas.

Many attractions and natural landmarks are close to the Parkway. Easy on and off access allows the traveler to visit one of the many close by cozy mountain towns. Towns like Boone, Hendersonville, Asheville, and Cherokee are located just a few miles from the main road. Some of the more popular attractions and sites include:

• Natural Bridge of Virginia
• Shenandoah Caverns in Virginia
• Chimney Rock Park, NC
• Grandfather Mountain, NC
• Mount Mitchell State Park – the highest mountain peak east of the Mississippi River
• Linville Falls, NC
• Linn Cove Viaduct – a 1,234 foot curve with gorgeous views
• Mount Pisgah
• The Biltmore Estate, NC

The Parkway’s speed limit is 45 mph. Take your time enjoying the sights. Be on the lookout for wildlife. Deer love to graze by the side of the road and an occasional black bear comes out hunting for fruits and berries. The drive is open year round, but inclement weather does force closures. Expect extreme temperatures changes. Last October, we were caught in a snowstorm!!

For more information about The Blue Ridge Parkway, check out their website: www.blueridgeparkway.org.

Cars Lovers Heading To Las Vegas for Barrett Jackson Auction

Las Vegas, Nevada will become the center of the classic car universe September 23 – September 25th. Barrett Jackson returns to Las Vegas. For three days, classic, customs, modifieds, and first editions will roll across the auction block. Car collectors and car lovers will get the chance to see some of their favorite cars, bringing back memories from their youth, and see some of the more modern classics.

Barrett Jackson used to host just one auction a year in Scottsdale, Arizona. But as the car collector hobby has grown, they have expanded. Palm Beach, Las Vegas, and Orange County, California now host yearly auctions. Why the popularity? For the car collector, the auction offers a wide variety of rides in all different price ranges. For the car enthusiast, you never have to bid on a car. You can simply walk through and see all the cars that will roll across the auction block.

A general admission ticket (only $15) allows you access to see each of the cars that roll across the block. Rows and rows of automobiles are lined up for you to see up close and personal. Car enthusiasts hunt for their favorites and reminisce with fellow enthusiasts. Check out the car manufacturer’s displays and vendor displays. A general admission ticket also allows you to stand in the auction area. You can’t bid, but you can watch your favorite cars be auctioned off.

For those who want to bid, you will need to pre-register in advance. The auction begins on Thursday afternoon. The beginning of the auction typically offers the best deals. Saturday night is the big night, with some cars exceeding $200,000. Part of the fun is you never know which car is going to be the hot item. Every year is different – some years the vintage T-Birds are the “it” car to collect and other years the SS or the Dodge RT.

This is a must event for car lovers. Where else can you see hundreds and hundreds of perfectly restored or maintained classic Mustangs, T-Birds, Camaros, Cadillacs, Model As, and more? For more information, check out their website: www.barrett-jackson.com

Great Finds in the Florida Keys

Ah – The Florida Keys. A tropical paradise at the tip of Florida. The beautiful blue-green waters, the palm trees swaying in the breeze…….what more could you want out of a vacation? I am wrapping up our new Florida Keys Travel Guide (will be out at the end of this month) and wanted to share with you some of our top picks.

The Islander Resort Islamorada, Florida:

Wow. For years, I have driven past the historic Islander landmark and never really gave it a thought as I drove to my other hotel. But, this year, I wanted to give it a try. What a find!!

The Islander Resort is located in Islamorada on the Atlantic Ocean. Recently renovated, it offers some of the best amenities in the Keys. The resort sits on 25 acres of tropical paradise. Enjoy their private white coral sand beach (over 1,300 feet of beach), complete with complimentary lounge chairs. Fish off their 200 foot pier day or night and catch grouper, snapper, flounder, and more (no fishing license required). Take a dip in one of their two Oceanside pools. Thirsty or hungry? Sit at their poolside Tiki Bar overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Interested in watersports? Well, there is an activity hut on their beach where you can rent kayaks, bikes, snorkel equipment, and more.

The accommodations are first rate too. Each room comes with a complete kitchen and a large screened in porch (with a ceiling fan). Grills are scattered throughout the property where you can enjoy grilling out after a relaxing day on the beach. Guests can choose from oceanfront suites or lanai villas. Did I mention you also get a complimentary continental breakfast with your room rate? Plus, no resort fees!!

If you are looking for a first class resort experience in the Florida Keys, with an incredibly friendly staff, then make sure to check out The Islander Resort. Take a look at their website for great package deals throughout the year: www.islanderfloridakeys.com

Sandy’s Café Key West, Florida:

Since Key West is only about 90 miles away from Cuba, prepare to taste one of the best Cuban sandwiches in Florida. Growing up in the Tampa area, I have tasted my fair share of Cuban sandwiches – the La Tropicana in Ybor City being one of the best.

But in the Keys, Sandy’s Café by far serves up the best Cuban Mix sandwiches. Pressed Cuban bread, roasted pork, ham, melted cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes are served up hot and fresh with French fries. Absolute heaven!! Add a cup of Café con Leche and you have a traditional Cuban lunch. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, they serve up traditional Cuban breakfast sandwiches and great entrées too.

Don’t let the location deter you – it’s at the M&M Laundry. Just step up to the counter and place your order. There is no indoor seating and just a few stools at the counter. But hey, drive just a few blocks to the beach and have a picnic.

Location: Sandy’s Café; 1026 White Street; Key West, Florida 33040

America's National Park

Summer is winding down. Maybe some of you went to one of America’s beautiful National Parks for vacation. Or maybe some of you are planning your next National Park getaway.

Ever wonder what your favorite park looks like at this very moment? I stumbled upon a great website that has live webcams at some of America’s most popular parks. The National Park Service operates the site, which is actually for measuring air quality. But go ahead and ignore all that mumbo jumbo about air quality. Just click on your favorite park and be transported to a relaxing moment with Mother Nature.

Take in the beautiful vistas of Grand Canyon National Park. Relive your family’s Washington DC vacation by taking a peak at the Lincoln Memorial and National Monument. Wonder if the leaves are changing yet in Great Smoky Mountain National Park? Check out their two webcams. California dreaming? Take a look at the Point Reyes cam.

Check out these webcams by going to www.nature.nps.gov/air/WebCams. There are live shots of Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Joshua Tree, National Mall, Great Smoky Mountains, Point Reyes, Big Bend, Denali (in the summer), Mount Rainer, Olympic National Park, Acadia, North Cascades, Sequoia, and Theodore Roosevelt Parks.

But the best National Park webcam of all can be found by clicking on this site: www.nps.gov/archive/yell/oldfaithfulcam.htm. Why?
You get to see live shots of Old Faithful – watch it erupt just like you did when you visited Yellowstone National Park!! There is even an eruption prediction in the upper left hand corner. Plus there are links to webcams at Mammoth Hot Springs and Mount Washburn.

Enjoy!!

Tickets for Space Shuttle Discovery’s Final Launch – November 2010

America’s Space Shuttle program is rapidly winding down, with only two scheduled launches remaining. If you have ever been to a space shuttle launch, then you know what an amazing experience it is. Crowds gather along the shore waiting with anticipation as the countdown clock clicks down. Then, Liftoff!! Puffs of white smoke are visible as the shuttle clears the tower. If you are close enough, you might even feel the ground shake. Regardless, you will hear the thundering roar of the engines as astronauts ride on a column of fire to outer space. Keep following the column – you will see the booster rockets separate and fall back to earth. WOW!!

If you have never been to a launch or want to catch one more before the program comes to end, you might want to clear your schedule for early November. Discovery is set to fly one last time before it goes to its new permanent home at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum on the National Mall.

The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex has been offering the public the option to purchase launch viewing tickets for years. These viewing tickets get you as close as possible to the launch site when you are a member of John Q public. (There are closer sites, but unless you are a VIP, press member, or just really lucky, you can forget about that option).

Because of the popularity of the final flights, they are changing the process up at bit. You must register to have an opportunity to buy tickets. Yep, if you don’t register, then you won’t be able to buy them. So, if you were planning a trip down to see the launch and want to get really, really close to all the action, then you need to follow the below:

1. Register between August 16, 2010 (beginning at 9AM) through August 23, 2010 (ending at 5PM) by calling 1-800-936-0506 (U.S.) or 1-312-429-0505 (International)
2. A random drawing will be held between August 26th and September 17th. You will be notified via e-mail whether you have or have not been picked.
3. If you are chosen, then you get to buy tickets. Note - there are only 6 tickets per household. You will be given a ticket for one of the following three viewing areas: NASA Causeway, Kennedy Visitor Complex, or the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame. You will also be given an Admission ticket to Kennedy Visitor complex to use within 7 days.

For a die-hard space fan, this is the ultimate experience. It will be a once in a lifetime event. For more details and pricing, check out the following website: www.ksclaunchtickets.com

If you just want to go down and see the launch, there are plenty of places you can view the launch for free in Titusville and Cocoa Beach. Check back in October – I will post a blog with some of the best free viewing spots. This picture was snapped last year at a free viewing area.

Florida’s Dog Friendly Beaches – Sanibel

So, it’s finally August, one of the hottest and steamiest months of the year. We are officially in the dog days of summer. Wouldn’t your canine best friend love a day at the beach?

I have a yellow Labrador retriever named Smokey, and living in Florida, he loves his beach days. But, you may have trouble finding dog friendly beaches in the Sunshine State. Many of the beaches don’t allow dogs. Some only allow dogs to visit certain times of the day. And then there are the few beaches that dogs are allowed to play on any time of day.

Sanibel has to be one of the most dog friendly beaches in Florida. In fact, Smokey gives their beaches his very coveted Four Paws Up award!!

Sanibel is one of Florida’s most beautiful beach destinations. Located west of Fort Myers, the beaches are known around the world for their beautiful blue green waters, white sandy beaches, and shelling. In fact, people come from all over the world in search of some of Mother Nature’s most beautiful treasures.

All of Sanibel’s beaches are dog friendly. As long as your dog is on a leash, he (or she) can walk along the shoreline, play in the water, dig holes, and roll around in the sand. You can walk for miles on beaches that are literally postcard perfect. If you get hot, you and your pooch can go for a swim. Smokey loves to swim out to the sandbar and back!!

For humans, it doesn’t get much better than this. Pick out your favorite spot on the beach. Setup the chairs, beach umbrella, picnic lunch, then sit back, relax, and feel the tropical breezes on your face.

Two of Smokey’s favorite dog friendly beaches on Sanibel are:

Bowman’s Beach: This beach is located just off Sanibel-Captiva Road. Shimmering white sand, beautiful blue-green water, excellent shelling, and some pretty good fishing make this a popular spot for both humans and canines.
Blind Pass: Blind Pass links Sanibel to Captiva. Dogs are only allowed on the Sanibel side. Park in the small lot and then start walking. You can walk for miles here or pick out your perfect spot to relax.

To get to Sanibel, you will have to pay a $6 toll to cross the causeway. And, once you get to your beach, you will have to pay to park by the hour. But it’s a small price to pay for a lifetime of beach memories for you and your dog.

OK. I am going to shamelessly promote one of the travel guides I wrote for Great American Vacation Ideas. The Sanibel-Captiva guide is filled with areas to visit on the islands, detailed beach information, shelling tips, plus lodging and dining ideas. Go to our website, www.greatamericanvacationideas.com and click on the Florida tab to purchase it. Once your done reading, you will want to pack your bags and leave today!!!

Hot August Nights in Reno, Nevada

If you are a classic car lover, then consider cruisin’ on over to Reno, Nevada. The annual Hot August Nights event takes place August 1st – August 8th. Reno, Sparks, and South Lake Tahoe play host to hundreds and hundreds of classic rides.

Love the classic cars of the 50’s and 60’s? Well, this will probably be as close to Heaven on Earth for the classic car lover. Classic T-Bird convertibles are lined up next to Vettes, GTO, Mustangs, ’57 Chevy’s, Lead Sleds, Rat-Rods, and more!!

Casinos around the area host “Show n Shine” competitions, classic car auctions, swap meets, gearhead games (think lug nut stacking), and classic car competitions. The best event – the nightly cruises in Reno & Sparks. Claim your spot on the curb and relive your youth as the classic cars roll on by.

Of course the 50’s and 60’s weren’t just about the cars, music played a huge role too. Each of the big casinos hosts nightly free entertainment!! This year’s lineup includes Herman’s Hermits, The Buckingham’s, Sonny Turner (lead singer of The Platters), tribute bands to Frankie Valli & The Beach Boys, and more!!

This is a great place to host an event. If you need a break from looking at all those classic cars, then head over to Lake Tahoe. Play golf on one of the many gorgeous courses or take a boat ride across the beautiful shimmering lake. And then there are the casinos like Harrah’s and Circus Circus. Maybe you will win big enough at the slots or poker tables to buy one of those classic rides. (Don’t bet on it!!)

For more information and event schedules, make sure to visit the official Hot August Nights website: www.hotaugustnights.net.
